They were returned to DWM, and subsequently marked with the Chilean crest for inclusion in one of the Chilean contract orders. But this is one of the last batch of O.V.S.-marked rifles that were intercepted by the British in 1899.

This rifle was initially slated for delivery to the Orange Free State in South Africa during the Second Boer War. Often mistakenly called вЂњModel 1895вЂќ, these are mechanically the Model 1893, because they have a square-bottom bolt and donвЂ™t have the Chilean Model 1895-style third locking lug. The no-prefix Model 1893s were some of the first produced after Ludwig Loewe was merged into DWM in 1897. Matching number on cleaning rod, triggerguard, and floorplate, but not the bolt. A later-style russet leather sling is included. The bolt stop and follower still show some brilliant electric blue color. (See photos.) The stock shows a faint cartouche.

The rifleвЂ™s wood and metal show only light service wear. Cleaning rod is present and number-matching! Bore is bright, with sharp rifling. Chilean crest is intact on receiver ring.

This rifle likely started out with a straight bolt, but was retrofitted with a cavalry-syle bolt.

This well-built rifle had completely interchangeable parts and many 1893's we've had in years past had mismatched bolts from swap-outs.either from routine cleaning or capture. It still has its original matching number bolt. There is no pitting on the metal.especially against the edges of the wood which would soak up moisture in more tropical climates. Until just recently, he had never been able to improve upon it and it's not hard to see why. It came to us from a collector who owned it for the past thirty years. Starting in 1896, the Spanish arsenal at Oviedo began production of the Model 1893 under license from Mauser. All matching numbers including bolt, however the cleaning rod is missing.
